Youth World Championships Qualification
In order to compete in the YWC you must qualify for the spots from your country. For the U.S. team, these individuals will qualify during the SI Cup May 1-3, 2009 in Carbondale, Illinois. The organizer for this event is SI Archers JOAD and Dave Logsdon and Patty Blakely. Please see the website for additional information http://www.geocities.com/si_archers_joad/2009_SI_Cup.html?1232651354287 Questions about the event can be sent to si_archers_joad@yahoo.com or call Dave at 618-210-6110 or Patty at 618-697-0952. The selection process is outlined in detail further below.
Youth Olympic Games (YOG)
The IOC has announced that it will hold the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore August 14-26, 2010. More information about this event can be found under Olympics on the FITA website http://www.archery.org/ . There will be 32 female and 32 male competitors. This competition, like the Olympics, will only have a recurve division (no compound division like the Youth World Championships). There will only be two slots available for our country, but we must qualify for these slots similar to how we have to qualify for slots in the Olympics.
- - 1 Male Recurve
- - 1 Female Recurve
Under the rules of the IOC, the athletes must be born between January1, 1992 and December 31, 1993 to participate in Singapore.
Archers must also shoot a Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) in a 70m Round/60m Round or a FITA Round.
Boys | FITA round 1200 (junior) or 1220 (cadet) 70m round 600 (junior) or 610 (cadet) |
Girls | FITA round 1180 (junior) or 1200 (Cadet) 70m round 590 (junior) or 600 (Cadet) |
The MQS must be achieved in the qualified period of July 11, 2009 (starting at the 2009 Youth World Championships) to July 1, 2010. Athletes who are shooting the cadet distances in 2008 can obtain the MQS in 2009 as a cadet or obtain the MQS in 2010 in the junior distances.
The participating archers will compete in an individual competition and a team competition. However, the team competition will not be against other countries, rather the nations will be mixed. The mixed team round will be a round shot with one boy and one girl from a different country shooting together against another mixed team in an Olympic Round match format. The teams will be mixed so the competition is very balanced. For instance the number one boy with the number 32 girl will shoot against the number 32 boy combined with the number 1 girl in the first round and so on.
Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers
There are three ways a country can earn the two slots available for the YOG.
- Youth World Championships 2009 in Ogden (USA) in the special qualification tournament
- Continental Qualifying tournament - (events not yet determined)
- Through Universality places - (not likely for the U.S. since we have so many top athletes and sports)
On Friday July, 17th during the Youth World Championships, FITA will be conducting a trials event for slots for the first ever YOG. During the one-day qualification, each country is allowed up to three female and three male competitors. However, these competitors have to be born between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1993 AND have to be part of the team competing in the Youth World Championships. Of the 32 slots available for the competition for each gender, 17 slots will be allocated to the countries with the highest ranked archers during this event with a maximum of one (1) per country.
If we, as a country, do not earn our slots at the YWC, we have the option to attend one of the Continental Qualifiers to try to obtain them.

6) Will there be a separate ranking round for the qualification tournament in Ogden?
No, the qualification round of the Youth World Championships will be used as ranking round for the qualification tournament. For boys (*) the 70m will be used and for girls (*) the 60m.

8) I obtained a place at the Youth Championships for the Youth Olympic Games. Does this mean I will compete in Singapore?
No, not for sure. Places are obtained for your National Olympic Committee. Your federation has to nominate the archer they wish to represent them and then the NOC has to accept this proposal.
9) Which distances will I shoot on to obtain a quota place for the Youth Olympic Games?
Ogden YWC: The qualification round for the Youth World Championships will be shot as a FITA Round for the category they compete in:
For boys born in 1992 (juniors): 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m

For girls born in 1993 (cadets): 60m, 50m, 40 and 30m
The score of the 70m for boys and 60m for girls will be used as entrance for the qualification tournament which is an Olympic Round at 70m for boys and 60m for girls.
Continental Qualifiers in 2009: same principle as Ogden so boys will shoot 70m and girls 60m for the Olympic Round and the score of that distance is used as qualifier.
Continental Qualifiers in 2010: For all archers 70m will be used for the Olympic Round.
10) What is this mixed team round?
The mixed team round will be a round shot with one boy and one girl from a different country shooting together against another mixed team in an Olympic Round match format. The teams will be mixed so the competition is very balanced. For instance the number one boy with the number 32 girl will shoot against the number 32 boy combined with the number 1 girl in the first round and so on.
11) What are the universality places?
These places are places to guarantee that each NOC has a minimum of 4 athletes at the Youth Olympic Games. They are allocated according to a procedure which you can find on the FITA website. The number of NOCs that can apply for them are limited.
